Today, the “Fuji Sankei Business i” newspaper in Japan, published an article about my research of Information Security at The University of Tokyo. The topic of the article is “Time Based Spam Filter” (in Japanese).

These proposed spam filter works using the time information of the email to classify it as spam or not-spam. The actual accuracy of the filter is around 90%. One of the pros of this filter is that is full-independent of the language of the email and is one of the most efficient spam filters. These give us a great tool for implementing in mobile devices or as a auxiliary method to fight spam.

Hal Licino just published a study at hubpages.com about a comparison between efficiency on basic operations in two computers. That is not new, but the interesting thing is that one of that computers is 21 year older than the other!

The two candidates where a ‘86 Mac Plus running System 6.0.8 OS and a AMD DualCore running Windows XP SP2.

And who you think that is the winner?? Unbelievable but the Mac Plus was faster than the AMD DualCore in 53% of the operations tested!!

The tests consist of simple, but most used operations that current office users use in normal environments in Word and Excel. And the article claims that “the massive advances in technology in the past two decades have brought zero advance in productivity“.

Here is the link to the article if you want to see the details of the test:

This is the machine that won to the AMD DualCore:

Have you ever wanted to show in a google map from which country your visitors that have been posted a comments come from?

Ok, so I just developed this new plugin so everyone can see this information. This new plugin is based on the ip2nation database.

This plugin checks for all your visitors comments in your posts and obtain the IP address for each comment. Then based on the IP address, the plugin obtains the country and the longitude and latitude of that country. With that information and thanks to the wonderful GoogleMap API; the plugin can generate a map with markers indicating the places from where the comments have been wrote and the number of comments in that country.

Here you can see the map of my comments generated by this plugin:

      onloadpage();
	  }

Next, I will show the basic documentation for the plugin.

Set up the MySQL database (as mentioned on Ozh website)

First of all, go to ip2nation and download the .sql file (I’m not mirroring it because it is updated from times to times, so get the latest one) This .sql file will create two tables, ip2nation and ip2nationCountries.

Tips : first, install PHPMyAdmin on your website. This is a great interface for anything you can do with MySQL databases. Once it’s done, look for the “SQL” link in the menu : you will be prompted for a .sql file, for example the one you just downloaded on your computer. It will set up and populate the required tables.

Download the plugin

					Wordpress plugin: Comments on a Map

					Version 1.0 - April 6, 2007, Downloads: 798 times

Click in the file and save it in your preferred folder. You will need a compression utility like WinZip to uncompress the zip file of the plugin; then drop the directory called “comments_map” in your plugin directory (yourblog/wp-content/plugins). Then activate the plugin (in the admin interface).

Also with this plugin I included the free to use tiny flags pack created by Zarkof and developed originally for this site.

Use the plugin

There exists two ways to include a the map on a post or a page:

<!––commentmap––> : This tag you can add it when you are writing a post or a page with wordpress and want that the map appears in that post or page.

commentMap() : This is a PHP function, if you want to add the map in a template or different place than a post (like a fixed page).

The function commentMap() has 5 default parameters. If any parameter is not used, then the plugin will obtain the parameter from the plugin configuration page on the wordpress administration panel. The list of default parameters are:

$google_key : The GoogleMap API Key needed for your site in order to rander the map (GoogleMaps API registration - Enter your blog URL as the GoogleMaps URL)

$width : The width of the map displayed in pixels.

$height: The height of the map displayed in pixels.

$style: The css style that will be applied to the div containing the map (example: margin:5px;).

$return: The default value is 0, this means that the function will print the map directly; if this value is set to 1 then the function will return the code of the map instead of printing it.

If you use the <!––commentmap––> tag inside any post, then the configuration parameters will be obtained from the plugin configuration page.

In the configuration page are defined the same parameters mentioned here plus 5 other style-type parameters:

Label text color : This will define the color of the text displayed on the information window above marker. You can input in text (ex. red, blue, black) or in the standard css format (ex. #333333)

Country name font size : This will define the font size of the title, in this case the country name in the information window above marker.

Country name style : The style of the country name in the information window above marker.

Information font size : The size of the font in the information window above marker with exception of the country name.

Use flag in label : If is activated it will print a flag of the country (to the left of the country name) based on the tiny flags pack images created by Zarkof.

Examples of use

Here is a list of use-examples for this plugin.

The first one is using the tag inside a post or page wrote in wordpress:

... here some text from the post
<!––commentmap––>
here more text in the post …

This is the most simple form of using the plugin. But if you want to modify a wordpress template or simply you are creating your fixed page for wordpress you can always use the commentMap() function as in this example with the default parameters:

< ?php get_header(); ?>
< ?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
Look! you can see from where everyone has posted a comment:
< ?php commentMap();?>
< ?php endwhile; endif; ?>
< ?php get_footer(); ?>

Here is another example changing the size to the map to 300×200 pixels and print a black solid border of 2 pixels around the map:

< ?php get_header(); ?>
< ?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
Look! you can see from where everyone has posted a comment:
< ?php commentMap('', 300, 200, 'border:2px solid black');?>
< ?php endwhile; endif; ?>
< ?php get_footer(); ?>

If you are importing the plugin from a different site, or you are using multiple blogs in one installation of wordpress, then you need to specify the GoogleMap API Key for each blog. In this example I am using as a parameter a GoogleMap API Key (You need to get your own key, if you use this key on your site it will not work!):

< ?php get_header(); ?>
< ?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
Look! you can see from where everyone has posted a comment:
< ?php commentMap('ABQIAAAAD6dypj2zClONNwYiohZ0PBTJQVVUoL2EfZ-u
GF_bMN6p27nuhBRD7W2-oEajMAAHu9lUHh4o9bAUQA’);?>
< ?php endwhile; endif; ?>
< ?php get_footer(); ?>

Notes

If you need support, please be as simple, consistent and accurate as possible. If you need to post lines of code, please upload it somewhere and give me the information to check the code. I can not give support of anything in relation with ip2nation, please refer to the author pages.

I modified the wordpress plugin called IP 2 Nation in order to retrieve 2 important values of the ip2nation database used in the generation of maps: the Longitude and Latitude of the country based on the IP. This plugin is based on the version 1.1 by Ozh and Per Gustafsson.

This is my first plugin update for Wordpress, I hope it is useful. I am planning to use it to generate another plugin for create a Google Map based on the IP addresses of the comments of a user.

Any suggestion, is welcomed, thank you.

					Wordpress plugin: IP 2 Nation Latitude and Longitude Update

					Version 1.0 - April 05, 2007, Downloads: 668 times

Click in the file and save it in your preferred drive. You will need a compression utility like WinZip to uncompress the zip file of the plugin; then drop the file “wp_vz_ip2nationlocation.php” in your plugin directory (yourblog/wp-content/plugins). Then activate the plugin (in the admin interface).

Note: If you have the previous version of IP 2 Nation you first need to deactivate it and delete the file “wp_ozh_ip2nation.php” of your wp-content/plugins directory.

Use the plugin

The use of this plugin is exactly the same as mentioned by Ozh in the original plugin page, I only added 2 extra functions to obtain the Latitude and Longitude of a country:

getCountryLat() : return the numeric Latitude of the country.

getCountryLon() : return the numeric Longitude of the country.

Both functions have two optional parameters:

$display : default is 0, means that you don’t want to print the result, just to return it. 1 to print it.

$ip : default to the remote ip address ($_SERVER[’REMOTE_ADDR’]) .

As mentioned it implements exactly the two other functions defined by the original plugin: wp_ohz_getCountryName() and wp_ohz_getCountryCode(), you can see the definition and examples of these two function here.

Examples of use

Here is a simple example of using the two new functions implemented with the default parameters:

< ?php
echo “Your country Longitude is “.getCountryLon();
echo “Your country Latitude is “.getCountryLat();
?>

Another example with different parameters, where the Longitude and Latitude is printed and the IP is obtained from the comment author IP in Wordpress:

< ?php comment_author_link() ?>
from Longitude < ?php getCountryLon(1,$comment->comment_author_IP) ?>
and Latitude < ?php getCountryLat(1,$comment->comment_author_IP) ?>

Notes

If you need support, please be as simple, consistent and accurate as possible. If you need to post lines of code, please upload it somewhere and give me the information to check the code. I can not give support of anything in relation with ip2nation or the original IP 2 Nation Wordpress plugin.

You had never think in how companies like Google makes money? Here I found a interesting article in enquiro.com about that:

How Google Makes Money
February 24, 2006

I was checking our referrer stats and noticed quite a few queries lately relating to how Google makes money. In fact many of the queries are “how does google make money”. So I thought I’d write this article explaining what it is that Google does that makes them so much money.

In 2005 Google’s revenues were over $6 billion on which they earned about $1.5 billion in net income. This is a far cry from larger companies like ExxonMobile which made over $25 billion profit.

But in just a short time Google has increased its value to over $110 billion, putting it on par (in value) with the likes of Cisco Systems, Nestle and Coca-Cola.

So the obvious question is - how can Google make so much money?

Well, Google makes most of its money through the sale of ads. In fact, of the company’s $6.2 billion in revenue in 2005, over $6 billion is from the ads.

Imagine that - Google can make so much money from ads which cost from a few pennies, to a few dollars per click.

But it’s not just the ads which help influence its value. Sure it makes most of its money from the ads, but Google’s share price is also strong and has been since it went public. Google’s shares are now worth over $350 each. Considering they opened at between $80 and $100 per share you can see how much the company has earned just from selling shares in itself.

And the value of those shares is largely determined by the revenue earned from advertising. If we make some assumptions we can guess the traffic generated by Google.

For example, if we assume the average cost per click is a quarter (25 cents) then Google received about 24 billion ad clicks. That works out to about 60 million paid clicks per day, which means Google earns about $15 million per day on paid advertising!

Granted, the company also has some large costs, but essentially Google earns millions per day from the ad network they have.

And remember that the ads you see on Google are not only on Google.

Google also has a program called “AdSense” which allows individual webmasters and site owners to place Google ads on their sites and earn a percentage on every click. From these types of ads there are reports that site owners have earned more than $1 million per year on Google ad clicks.

In addition to this Google also has partnerships with other large sites such as AOL which also display Google ads and take a percentage of every click.

But in every case where Google ads appear on other sites, you can pretty much be guaranteed that Google earns the lions share of those clicks.

So, there you have it - a very high level overview of how Google makes money.
